Custom Cupcakes - Ski Theme

Before I made the Easter cookies, one of the ski moms from our club asked me to make her son some cupcakes for his upcoming 11th birthday.  She wanted a ski theme and the colours blue and brown, and the cupcakes to be chocolate.  Of course I told her "no problem", then stressed over what I would do.  I had been thinking for some time of trying gum paste as I had read that it is similar to sculpting like Fimo (only edible).  So I bought a small bag of gum paste at Michaels, and armed with several knowledgeable websites, coloured some gumpaste a nice blue.   I cut and sculpted some skis and let them dry over night.  I used an edible black marker to enhance the top rounded edge of the ski, I then crossed two together like and "X" and stuck them in the "snow".  I piped the bindings on with brown icing.
I custom made a cupcake pik with "Happy Birthday xxx" using my Cricut - et voila!  This is what you see.  The photos are not that great as I quickly took them at night before delivering them to my customer. She was so sweet and enthusiastic over them, and I was quickly over my stress that she would not like them.  She asked me for a bunch of business cards and told me she would find me more customers.  Most importantly though, the birthday boy loved them.

On a final note - gumpaste is not as easy to sulpt with as Fimo - it is WAY harder.

2011 Christmas Baskets Custom Order

Happy 2012.  I can't believe how long ago I posted last.  Too busy making stuff and not enough time spent on showing everyone what I am up to.  I will try to catch up so you can all see what I have been up to.
This past Christmas I was asked again to create baskets for an executive to give to his clients.  This year, I thought I would show you progress photos so you can see some of what I do to create these.
Some of my photos were taken using my iPhone, so please excuse the quality of those.

The first thing I do is head to Michaels when the baskets and other things I need are on sale (BUT also armed with my 25% off my entire order INCLUDING sale items!)  The baskets were 50% off, plus the 25% coupon - that is 75% off!  This is usually the same time I pick a mini theme - based on what I can get on sale.  This year I was able to have a Cardinal theme.  The baskets had a cardinal on them, I found a cardinal ornament as a basket filler, and I made cardinal cards.  The colours of the packaging inside the baskets were coordinated with the "cardinal" colours.

Next, I bake.  I made 7.5 dozen decorated cookies, 5 dozen cake pops, and I lost count of how many chocolates I made.  I just kept stuffing the boxes until they were full.

The cookie boxes were made to hold four cookies each for a total of three boxes per basket and a dozen cookies.  Three boxes per basket meant that I had to make 21 boxes (plus one for my client).
I cut each box out of my coordinating cardstock using my Cricut cutter and a custom design I made using Make The Cut.  I use Sookwang adhesive tape when creating boxes because I know my boxes will stay together using this stuff (plus no drying time with liquid glue).  I have to cut small pieces around the window as I did not want to waste my plastic for the windows.  That stuff is expensive, but very durable.

Next, I decorated the edge of the boxes with coordinating border strips I found at Michaels. I added Christmas printed parchment paper inside the box to protect it from the cookies, added the cookies, then tied them up with some bakers twine (I picked this twine up last year after Christmas for a steal!)

Next cake pops!  I should mention that the flavours for the cake pops were vanilla cake with vanilla icing, with white candy melts, then coated with coconut, or crushed candy canes, or decorated with some neat holly and berry decorating bits.  I had picked up Christmas themed boxes and filled them with floral foam.  I added some white basket filler paper, then started to cover and tie a bow around each cake pop, and add them to the box in a flower arrangement.  The only semi-sure way to display and keep cake pops protected is to store them upright like this. If I lie them down, they don't look as pretty, and they tend to crack easier.  When I was making the cake pops, I had to stop and go out to the garage to make a custom cake pop stand so each cake pop could harden.  I had some left over pine wood, cut them to lengths that would fit in my fridge, then penciled in where the holes should go.  I did not want the holes to go all the way through otherwise the cake pops would fall through.  So I  measured off how far the drill would go down, and covered the no-drill zone with painters tape.  My stands are pretty rustic, and are not for display purposes - but they do the trick! Last year I used styrofoam and poked them in it - that was a pain in the rear!

Ok - getting closer.  For some reason I don't have any photos of the chocolates, or the making of the boxes.  I was probably pretty time crunched at that point.  Each box was cut using my Cricut (2 per basket) into a Chinese take out box. I found the size I liked at Michaels, took it apart, traced it on paper, scanned it, then manipulated the scanned image with Make The Cut, to cut out using my Cricut.  I made the handles out of green, red and gold wire I already had.  I added some more parchment paper inside and filled them up with little chocolate gingerbread men, tiny candycane flavoured snowflakes, larger mint flavoured snowflakes, etc.  There had to have been hundreds of these as they were each very small and I filled the boxes to the top.
The last thing I did was make the coordinating cards.  I did take pictures of the entire process of colouring using my Copics, but this post is already too long winded.  So I will give you the Coles notes version.
Stamped the Cardinal image I found at Scrapbookers Paradise using Memento ink, onto Copic friendly cardstock.  The colours I used are shown in one of the photos.  I searched for Cardinal photos online and noticed that they are pretty dark around their beaks and eyes, so used my black multi-liner to add and enhance some of this colour.  Once the image was coloured in, I used a pen glue on the snow areas, and added very fine glitter.  I again used my Cricut to cut the sparkly frames and used foam dots to make it pop out from the image.  Stamped a holiday generic message inside, added envelopes, and wrapped this all up in a red bow for the client to sign and add to his baskets.

Sookwang tape to place the bows I made, and called in the courier (but first I took some pictures of the final product. Wanna see??

And the final comment from the client and his admin assistant - they were blown away and very happy with their baskets.  All in a days work......er...several weeks work!

Birthday and Christmas Gifts

I recently sent a package home to my mom filled with Birthday and Christmas gifts.  Here are photos of some of the handmade items I created for them.  These are the packaging for the gifts inside.  I made these with the Cricut Tags, Bags & Boxes cartridge and some DCWV paper.  I used really small powerful magnets I had lying around to close them.  This one is a gift for my niece who's birthday is Christmas Day - Happy Birthday!!!

The rest of these are gifts for my family for Christmas....

Halloween goodies for the girls to take to school/pre-K

I made these little bags to hold hand-made candies (eyeballs and skulls) for the girls to give out at
school/pre-K.  I made 44 in total.  I used my Cricut to cut the bags. I bought a bag of Halloween die cuts at Michaels and adhered them to a scalloped circle (Stampin Up punch) with a pop dot.  When I ran out of the die cuts, I used some spiders, bats, and ghosts cut using my cricut and added googly-eyes....
The candies were made using melted chocolate wafers and 3D molds.  Once the front and back of the eyeball or skull was hardened, I poped them out and stuck them together with more of the melted candy

These are the candies I made:

Mr. BMW

As you may or may not be aware, my husband is crazy about BMW cars. He is also crazy about himself. So for his 38th birthday this year, I made this card for him. The car was cut using my Cricut, as was the paperdoll body. I found some BMW logos and used Photoshop to make them various sizes figuring that one set would fit the car. I also did this with his head. I got to shrink my husbands head!!! How many people can say that? I used his "offical" work photo. I wonder what else I can do with his shrunken head?
So, it is not a fancy card, but it is his card and he loves it. Of course I had to stroke his ego even more with the caption of "Best Man anyWhere." Oh well, I did get to shrink his head!

Cricut Snowman from Christmas Cheer

Well.  Since it is snowing here.... still - here is a nice winter fella to match the weather.  The snowman was made using my Cricut and the Christmas Cheer cartridge.  I used pop dots to make him stand out.  Some orange glitter on his nose.  The blue background was done using one of the winter themed Cuttlebug embossing folders.  The sentiment is from Stampin Up and I used chalk to further give the card some elegance.

Paisley Cricut cartridge coming January 2010 (???)

Another blog rumour.  This cartridge looks like a lot of fun too...my wallet is shrinking away in terror!

Elmo Party Cartridge coming January 2010(???)

Through the blog gossip channels comes a new cartridge for January.  Very cute cuts on this one, and the difference between this one and the Sesame Street Friends cartridge is that this has actual party elements to make and cut out for your little ones' birthday party!

Wedding Card

I created this card using Bazzil Wedding Pin Stripe cardstock. I cut the white pattern using Cricut Design Studio and the Storybook cartridge. The two inset matts are cut and edge embossed using Spellbinders Nestabilities Labels One. The large paper flower is from Dollarama, the smaller flowers are Prima and the faux pearls are from Kaisercraft. The branches were punched with a Martha Stewart paper punch. This card has gotten a lot of attention - I made a second one and gave it to my cousin for his wedding.

Scarecrow Decor

I have been wanting to make some fall decorations for around the house and then I found instructions and a .cut file for this scarecrow box here: http://www.customcrops.com/article_info.php?articles_id=123
Instead of stitching around the eyes and the mouth, I used 3D black paint. I didn't have anything black to stitch with. I could have used real raffia, but I wanted to try Donna's trick. The "fake" rafia came out darker than hers, but I still like it. I had these paper sunflowers from Dollarama lying around for a while now, and thought one would make a nice accent on the hat. I have some fall picks from Michaels that might look nice in the box.

Birthday Card:

I made this card for my daughter on her 9th birthday. The sentiment is from Stampin up. The pups are from the Cricut Paper Pups cartridge. The flowers are prima and the flourish is digital (PSE brush). I used some stickles to add some bling to the flourish.
